Starting University can be a stressful time. Separation from friends and family, assignments, exams and budgeting all being sprang on you at one time can be a lot to deal with.
How you cope with these issues is key to weather it develops in to a serious health problem.
Signs you may be stressed:
- Irritability
- Having trouble sleeping
- Headaches
A bit of stress is normal and helps in challenging situations. In small amounts it’s good, because it pushes you to work hard and do your best, including in exams.
However, too much stress could lead to physical and mental problems, such as:
- Anxiety
- Sweating
- Shortness of breath
- Depression
- Eating too much or too little
You can’t always fully prevent or get rid of stress, but there are certainly a range of tips and tricks to manage it better and get back to your day-to-day life.
- Eat healthy
- Exercise (this is key as it releases your endorphins!)
- Have some ‘me’ time
- Go outside
- Take a breath. Have a break
- Meditate (there are a variety of free downloadable apps on the app store/google play store which teach you how to regulate your breathing and relax your body. ‘Headspace’ and ‘Calm’ are 2 of the highest rated)
